Better known as the Horsehead and flame nebula, these two are located in the constellation of Orion. The bright star you see is the left most (or right most, depending on what hemisphere you live in) star in Orion’s belt, named Alnitak. This whole region of space is full of interesting nebulae to look at and photograph. The actual ‘Horse Head’ isn’t a typical nebula, its what we know as a dark nebula. It’s made up of gasses and dust so dense that light can’t pass through it, therefore bocking the light of the “red” emission nebula’s light. The Horsehead nebula is known to astronomers as Barnard 33 and IC 434 is the emission nebula behind it. The flame nebula seen underneath the star Alnitak is NGC 2024.
